The Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Story
Deep in the Southern Alps of New Zealand lies Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. From its craggy alpine ridges flows the purest fresh water on the planet. Ice cold. Constantly flowing. Perfectly chilled for a much prized southern delicacy.Cradled in the shadows of the southern Alps is a network of waterways connecting Lake Tekapo, Pukaki and Benmore. These lakes support New Zealann's largest renewable hydro shceme, harnessing millions of gallons of free flowing, pure glacial water, rich in minerals.
In this unique landscape we operate our hatchery, ensuring great care and responsibility are there right from the very beginning. This inspiring habitat is home to our Freshwater King Salmon. Born to swim they cover the equivalent of a half marathon everyday revelling in the swift flowing currents.
We prefer to feed our fish by hand. It's our chance to observe and respond to their needs through the growing cycle and the changing seasons. All feed is sustainable and certified GMO free.
From our fish husbandry to our care for the environment in which we farm. We're always exploring ways to redefine 'best practice', this includes adopting the highest working safety regimes, caring for our staff and supporting our local communities. Suggested Wines: As salmon is quite a meaty fish, if you grill or char it you can pair it with a red. Pinot Noir is a good match. If you prefer a white try a dry Pinot Gris. A fruity Pinot Noir is also a good wine match with Japanese style dishes such as salmon teriyaki.
